How to Care For Your Live Edge Wood Table Top

Blog

Each live wood table top is made to show the actual natural shape of the tree, which means that the uneven surface of the bark as well as pits and knots in the wood are all left visible to be appreciated and enjoyed. This unusual surface can be a challenge to clean and maintain. Following these tips will help you keep your live edge table in good condition for many years.

Dry Dust with Microfiber Cloths

Microfiber cloths have a super-soft, highly absorbent surface that allows them to clean basically any surface without scratching or leaving streaks. They're especially helpful for live edge wood tables because they lift dust right off the surface, and can often get dust deep in the grooves of the live edge. Dry dust your live edge wood table top on a regular basis to help keep it clean.

Go Easy on the Polish

Spray wood polish has a way of leaving a residue that can fog the figured wood of your table over time. This is a particular problem on live edge tables because of the naturally occurring ragged edges and pits in the surface of the wood. When wood polish fills these cracks, it can be hard to get out from these areas and can leave the table looking gunky and old.

If you do want to use wood polish on your live edge table, restrict the polish to the flat surface of the table, and try to keep it away from the unique grooves and pits.

Use Natural Cleaning Products

The best product to clean your live edge table with is vinegar. Vinegar is naturally anti-bacterial and can be used to remove built-up residue from the nooks and crannies of the irregular surface.

To use vinegar on your live edge table, mix equal parts vinegar and warm water together in a bucket. Dip a microfiber cloth into the water and then wring it out thoroughly so the cloth is only a bit damp instead of saturated.

Use the cloth to wipe down the table. With your finger, push the cloth into the grooves and pits on the surface of the table. When finished, dry the table with a dry microfiber cloth, then buff and polish the surface with dry chamois.

Protect the Wood From Moisture

Many live edge wood table tops are highly varnished, which means that the figured wood and the edges of the table almost look like they've been encased in glass. It can be easy to trick yourself into thinking this type of table would resist damage from moisture, but this is not the case. Keep a supply of coasters on-hand and in a convenient location, to make it easy for you and your guests to use the table without damaging it.

Improving Your Home By Crafting

About a year ago, I realized that I was running out of disposable income to use for decorating my place. Instead, I was working hard to pay my bills each and every month, and it was really frustrating. Fortunately, a friend of mine suggested saving money by crafting in my spare time. I started spending a lot of time looking around my house for things to fix up or use for crafts, and it was a great use of my spare time. Within a few weeks, I had made a few great wreaths for my front door and updated the crown molding around my house. This blog is all about improving your place with a few nice crafts.
